Cutting window sills to size
To cut to size, you will need a few supplies
- Angle grinder
- Continuous diamond blade
- Square ruler
- Spirit level
- Pencil
- Dust mask (FFP3)
- Safety goggles
- Workbench
- Measuring tape
- Scrap flat board (OSB) that you don’t mind cutting into during the process
Short side measurement:
Place the spirit level against the drip edge. Position the square ruler against the spirit level and draw a line along which you will cut later. Examine whether the desired length measurement is accurate this way.
Cutting
- Place a disposable board on the table for support.
- Position the window sill or stair tread on the table, ensuring it extends about 2-3 cm beyond the edge.
- Begin by cutting the drip edge as shown on the diagram.
- You can remove the handle from the angle grinder for better visibility since it can obstruct your view.
- Next, carefully follow the drawn line, rotating the corner grinder slightly upwards.
- Don’t hesitate to cut into the board (marked in white on the image) because it serves a purpose.
- Measure the desired length using a measuring tape and repeat the same process.
- The longitudinal cut should be made in the same way.
- For cases where the window sill location (rebate) is not at a right angle, it’s advisable to create a template out of cardboard and draw it onto the window sill. In this case, also consider the overhang, so it’s often better to cut the length first, then draw the template on the cut surface, extending it to account for the overhang.
